I work in rescue and one of the most common reasons for giving up a dog is that there is a new baby in the family. Brian’s book is an excellent sourse to read before the baby arrives. It gives you ideas on what to expect from your dog and what he may be thinking. It explains how to see the baby from the dog’s point of veiw and to prepare the dog for the baby’s arrival. A lot of problems can be prevented by reading this book.

This book is a gold mine of information for the care and safety of our beloved pooches. I got it thinking I would use it as a reference / first aid manual for my rambunctious terrier but the minute I opened it to “skim through it” I got hooked and read it cover to cover. Did you know grapes can cause kidney failure in some dogs? Or that the Sago Palm, very common in Southern California gardens, is lethal? A couple of nights ago I turned my back for a second and my dog gobbled up my pasta which was covered with a sauce made with huge chunks of garlic. I remembered seeing garlic on the list of toxic foods so I grabbed my book and turned to pg. 57 and to the most important list all dog owners should have taped on their refrigerator door. The information on separation anxiety (pg. 45) could have saved my dog years of 4th of July stress and if I had seen the safety tip about bolting out front doors earlier (pg. 23) I probably could have saved 00 on expensive TPLO knee surgery recently. Beautifully written and designed and meticulously researched, this book should be mandatory reading for all dog owners. In fact, I think it should automatically come with all new puppies and rescues as an instruction manual!

I Got Two Dogs: (Book and CD) Overview

Fanny and Blue may not be the smartest dogs, and they may not be the best-behaved dogs, but they are definitely the most-loved dogs.

John Lithgow’s bouncy song – in the book and on the accompanying CD – is based on his own family’s two dogs. And Robert Neubecker’s eye-popping illustrations capture the joy of all things dog.

This may be the greatest gift I have given my five year old – she LOVES the CD and will listen to it over and over until we make her shut it off. John Lithgow rocks, he does a GREAT job narrating the story, perfect for little kids! I’m not sure we have actually even read the book all the way through; the CD is really the shining star here. Cute story, I will definatly check out anything else by John Lithgow, this purchase was worth every penny!

After seeing that the only review on this book was left by someone complaining of it being confusing after reading it, but not the first book in the series, I felt I needed to give my two cents. You can’t start watching a movie in the middle then complain that you don’t know what’s going on. So, let me first stress that even though this is labeled “1″ it is not the first book in the series, it is the second, the first is “0″.

When you first meet the main characters in Volume 0 you learn about them and a bit of their back-stories but not how they’re connected. In this volume that process starts. You have Mihai, the retired assassin. Naoto, a sword wielding girl who’s searching for her parents killer. Heine, a genetically altered killer with a bloody past and a deep fear of women. And Badou, a nicotine obsessed informant and Heines occasional partner in crime.

The story is interesting and leaves you wanting more. The art is clean and the fight scenes are pure brilliance. Unique and flowing they offer a clear play by play of the action, not the incomprehensible “page vomit” you get in some manga.

I’ve found myself addicted after only these two volumes and am eagerly awaiting the next release.

A Dog at Sea: A Bull Moose Dog Run Mystery Overview

A CANINE CRUISE. A STORM OF MURDER. A LABRADOR NAMED RANDOLPH: OVERWEIGHT, OVERLY INTELLIGENT—AND OVERBOARD…

For Randolph and his owner, Harry, a struggling artist, it was dog heaven: a pet lovers cruise filled with canine experts and gung-ho trainers—plus plenty of art lectures for Harry and midnight buffets for Randolph. The two have come on board to follow clues that they hope will lead to the whereabouts of the long-lost Imogen, Randolph’s mistress and Harry’s beloved girlfriend. But no one prepared Randolph for being put on a diet (the horror!), not to mention a new meaning for “poop deck”—or anything about murder. Especially when one victim gets killed twice.

Now, with a storm bearing down on the ship, Milton Tabasco, TV’s celebrated dog “mutterer,” threatening to drive him mad, and a mysterious stalker shadowing Harry’s every move, Randolph is running out of time to catch a killer. After all, this Lab was born to eat—not to swim.…

He has an extremely high IQ and loves to read a variety of boojs; unusual traits in a canine. Randolph the Labrador and his less intelligent human companion Harry are on a canine cruise in which both species have the freedom of the Nordic Bliss as poop decks have different meanings. Ostensive the duo are enjoying their time at sea; but actually are following a clue to Imogen, Harry’s beloved human love and Randolph’s mistress. Fearing for Randolph and Harry in that order, she faked her death because a bad person with influential allies wanted control of her uranium fortune.

On board they meet Milton Tabasco, TV’s dog “mutterer”, who hypnotizes canines with his voice. At the Captain’s Table for dinner, Milton and his wife Kitty argue and she storms out of the dining room. Later, Randolph and Harry see her crying on the deck. Soon afterward they learn she jumped overboard and is assumed dead. Randolph sniffs Tabasco and concludes Milton killed his spouse. However the smell changes to regret so Randolph wonders if his original olfactory conclusion stinks. When someone else dies in a box that Milton uses as part of a magic trick, Tabasco was nowhere near the victim at the time of the murder. Randolph investigates and scents another homicide, but has to find a way to tell the tone deaf authorities who the killer is; he comes up with a devious brilliant plan.

Reminding me of my late Max (who understood the spelling of words like pizza and treat) and I am sure other readers of their brilliant dogs, Randolph loves to eat, eat, and eat yet always takes into account the best interest of his BF. In his third canine caper (see A Dog About Town and A Dog Among Diplomats), the sentient dog is at his best as he expects to dine, poop, sleep and dine, but the ship staff wants him to lose weight. His perspective (on the murders, the inquiry, exercise, and dieting, etc.) makes for a wonderful anthropomorphic whodunit.

Shelter Dogs Overview

Photographer Traer Scott’s endearing portraits of dogs living in American shelters are irresistible and heart-rending – and make a passionate appeal to dog lovers everywhere. Some of the dogs subsequently found good homes; others were never adopted. The portraits reveal the strikingly intense emotion, dignity and, sometimes, humour and whimsy that Scott saw in each face despite the dog’s circumstances. By documenting the undeniable expressions of emotion in the dogs encountered in her volunteer work, Scott raises awareness of animal rescue causes, and especially the need for more adoptive homes for abandoned dogs. This book of true portraits of fifty beautiful shelter dogs is a poignant and loving tribute to all dogs.

I work in a veterinary hospital, so naturally i love animals.. but I’ve got a weak spot for mutts, strays, shelter dogs and rescues. I purchased this book for our lobby, and then had to purchase another one for myself. The photographs are beautiful, the photographer captures them with dignity. My intention in placing this book in our lobby was to encourage people to rescue/adopt their next dog as opposed to buying, so clients could see the beauty in abandoned dogs. The book has definitely become a staff favorite, and I am so glad I purchased it!

Sleeping Dog (Missing Mysteries) Overview

First Holmes and Watson, then Nero and Archie, Now Leo and Serendipity—two detectives, two narrative voices, twice as much sleuthing and double the fun.

Originally published in 1985 by Arbor House 0-87795-738-X and by Warner in pbk. 0-446-32661-5, Sleeping Dog won the Nero Wolfe Award and was nominated for the Edgar, the Shamus, and the Anthony Awards. In 1999, the Independent Mystery Booksellers’s Association named it one of their 100 Favorite Mysteries of the Century. Poisoned Pen Press will republish the sequel, Laughing Dog, later this year.

Sleeping Dog introduces the unlikely duo of Serendipity Dahlquest, world-weary 14-year-old, and Leo “the Bloodhound” Bloodworth, a just plain weary forty-something PI. Serendipity wants to hire Leo to find her missing dog, the only reminder she has left of her long-gone father. Leo can’t be bothered with a kid, and passes her on to his sleazy partner, who shortly thereafter winds up dead. Of course Leo feels obligated to step in and try to resolve the situation. From there on it’s an escalating tale of misguided kidnappers, dogfights, drugs, and unique relatives all set again a Los Angeles background.

This story bears up well considering it was originally published almost twenty years ago. The author’s method of alternating voices between Serendity and Leo each chapter gives the reader two unique views of every situation in which the pair find themselves.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who likes mysteries that are lively without being too gory or too cute. I look forward to reading their second mis-adventure, Laughing Dog.
